Kyoto Sculpture
Gallery
Kyoto is the cultural arts center of Japan. An ancient city steeped in beauty and tradition. Inspiration for Michael's Asian work comes from his uncle, an Englishman and textile trader, knighted by the Queen in the early 1900's. One of his many accomplishments was to represent England in the signing of the Hong Kong treaty. This opened up trade with Asia in a successful flow across the waters, marking a new beginning and growth.

When Michael was 12 years old, his English mother moved her family of 5 boys to the beach. Corona del Mar, with its beautiful cliffs above sandy coves, reminded her of favorite childhood memories in Canford Cliffs, on the coast of England.
The inspiration for Michael's breathtaking fish came out of these years, when fishing was as simple as casting from the shoreline, or even a day trip out to deeper waters. Now living in Laguna Beach, daily walks along the beach with his dogs are a constant reminder of how precious our oceans, beaches and sea life are. We need to protects and replenish these treasured gifts.

Rabbits Rabbits
Gallery
The old English tradition for bringing good luck is to say "Rabbits, Rabbits" first words when you arise on the 1st day of the month.
Inspiration for these wonderful rabbits came from Michael's childhood in the Lake District of England in the many hours spent roaming the countryside with his brothers.
Michael was born in Harlingen, Texas. He enjoyed his time growing up with four brothers in Texas and with his mother’s family in England. They moved to Corona del Mar, California when he was 12. After attending Orange Coast College in California, Michael began an apprenticeship with Yacht Pottery, on the island of Bornholm, in Denmark. Renowned for their fine stoneware and porcelain, this Danish pottery was established in the 17th Century. Michael continued to travel extensively adding to his knowledge of ceramic history. He later accepted a teaching position in Exeter, England, where he studied with David Greene. Michael now resides with his family in Laguna Beach, California.
This work is designed and executed by Michael Ezzell. All are hand thrown on the wheel and sculpted ceramic, fired to 2000º. All are one of a kind. Metal surfaces allow for variations and the creativity of the finishes. Leaded, fused, and mosaic cut glass are used. LED lights are an option that increases the depth of the piece and intensity of the glass.
“Vessels do not take shape until an idea is ready to evolve. The course is not set. It becomes my responsibility as an artist to flow with the perception of the current. The mysteries of the mediums unfold and become details. Conflicting and complementary usage of materials begin to create alternate forms and bring interest through their diversity of texture and patterns. New inspiration will increase the depth of perception through the use of light.”
